THINGS DONE AT NIGHT

I Have Been Told

Text:

To wash your hair at night bring ghost
To sweep at night brings spirits
Someone once told me to be visited by a moth is to be in the presence of a passed relative

In this piece I used the oral tradition of the storytelling of superstitions specifically those told in Filipino folklore about ghost and spirits I grew up hearing in Hawaii. The project began by picking a space I felt could bring a simple action to life: like washing hair, sweeping, or bring focus to something like a moth being drawn to the light form the dark. I wanted to discover how these beliefs would translate through the moving image. I also wanted to see how the spoken word could be translated visually, literally allowing the text to move across the screen. There is progression of grammatical change in each statement going from how the phrase would be spoken to as it would be formally written.
